The whole board is like reading a Victorian novel...

So, since a vast majority of the members who actively post on this board seem to disagree what is the point? And what does it have to do with moderation? The members are making these posts you find so offensive, not the moderators.

You guys are talking about the atmosphere of the forum which has much more to do with the members than the moderators. If you didn't like the atmosphere of the resturaunt, would go you in anyway and complain about it? To quote Terre, "That kind of conduct doesn't go on in normal everyday activities among adults."

Then the thread gets edited, locked or deleted, everyone else is offended and the dissenting poster is shunned.
Yep, several members would probably report the rude post and then the moderator would delete it. And then the thread probably wouldn't degrade into be seven pages of posts with personal insults flying back and forth.

I can't for the life of me figure out how someone would be "shunned" on this forum. The only way I can think of to "shun" someone would be for people to just plain not respond to an individual, and I don't see that happening here.

Thanks Matt, said very well. And by the way, I enjoy Victorian novels and I'll bet others on this site do also. You'll have to excuse me, I've got to go take a nap.

  3. Hi Bob--Google attempts filtering the spam and crude/coarse posts. Does a fairly good job. Reading it via a news reader on the real, unfiltered feed is near pointless.

This isn't pointed to anyone in particular...Well, maybe the Super Mod...

But then again, aren't links to outside forums forbidden in the TOS? <g>...

    Take care, Mike

Technically its a newsgroup, not a forum

I was suprised when I visited the link actually see on topic posts rather than all porn ads. That seemed to be the way things were going the last time I visited a newsgroup several years ago. (Other than the Mcrosoft support newsgroups. They seem to keep those clean somehow and they are very active.)

No kidding? I did not know that (let my subscription to the German Usenet server lapse awhile back). Unfiltered rec.woodworking used to be long on entertainment value...assuming you like "R" ratings.

I even saw the "c" word (ends with a p) used in the off topic section. I had to shoo my children out of the room lest they see that filth.

  11. Ok, the forum should not change into something like that other forum. But, it would be nice if the moderators would loosen up the rules a little. I think all forum moderators , no matter what the forum, should take moderating a forum in moderation. Yeah, thats it!! Forum moderation should be taken in moderation! ROFLMAO

No: it was a link to the Google mirror of a Usenet group.

The thread I was clearly referring to was the meta-thread, the thread started in Off-Topic by Rob Bodenschatz about the locking of the aforementioned thread, a thread that has in fact been deleted.

    very thread.
You are correct - please be more specific when referring to a thread - like you did here - Yes the thread was closed and moved to the Moderators Forum by the Administration.

You should speak for yourself - not everyone else. I assume you have a very light case load based on the amount of time you spend attempting to get my goat. Believe me, that has been tried by the experts - and it is obvious you are not one.
