Thread: What do you think about this hunk of wood?

    My neighbor the tree surgeon dropped this off to me a couple months ago and i just got around to sawing it up! Thought it was strange.What do you guy think about it? Sap wood on one side and heart on another. I got 6 hunks like this.
    I'm gonna put a peice of this in the blank exchange thread.

    Well, I looked at it closely and I have to agree. It looks like a hunk of wood.

    Wow! I think it would be kinda' strange to have sap on one side of it and heart on the other! Weird! However, I'll bet it will make for a really cool piece!

    I took the liberty of scribbling on your piece of wood -- I hope that you don't mind. This certainly is interesting. The pic was a bit dark so I used photoshop to lighten it a bit and make some comments. It appears that the back side looks a bit like two trees grown together and I can see some evidence of that where the two colors meet so it may have been a double tree. I can see a tiny bit of sapwood on the right hand edge and the pith appears to be towards the right side which suggests that it may be a piece of reaction wood caused by a leaning tree. My guess about the pith is based on what appears to be some cracking starting there. I suspect that this piece of wood will be a challenge because it may want to move a lot as you turn it.
