I thought I would post here even though I am not much of a turner because
here is where I usually am known.
I was asked at Caterpillar to make this for someone who is retiring this Friday.
It is suppose to be a large drive coupling for one of their machines that this
person has spent many times rebuilding. I was given liberty to use whatever
kind of wood I wanted so I choose walnut, maple, purpleheart and just a tad
of oak which you can't even see. I did the turning in three parts so as to make
the coupling as real as possible. The real one has two tapped holes, one 1/2"
and one 1", but I only tapped the 1/2" hole in the purpleheart. The "drive end"
of the coupling has six 5/8" countersunk holes which are then drilled to 3/8".
The threaded end on the real one is 2 3/8" and I thought of taking it to a friend
to chuck it in his metal lathe to turn the threads, but I didn't see how we could
do it without damaging it. It is 6 1/2' in diameter and 8 1/2" tall. I hope he will
like it.
