Finished project - alcove built-in desk

    Hello All-

I just finished installing a built in alcove desk for my wife. She is a reading tutor so she has some unique requirements for her materials and workspace. For the past 3 years she was working on a folding table and stuck into her alcove of the home office we share.

It is Birch A-1 3/4 plywood, Birch A-4 1/4 and Maple

    Ideas that worked:
    1) The three units, bottom cubes, desk top and top cubbies are all 2" from the wall to accomidate wires and the laptop brick. In one of the bottom sections there is a access panel for power and phone jack. So as wiring requirements change I can reroute the cables.

    2) The horizontal shelves are biscuit joined to the styles. They are 1/2 shallower which gives a nice look.

    3) The "custom" lighting is 2 Ikea wall mounts for about $7 each including bulbs.

    That didn't:
    1) I did 95% of the edge banding before I read an article that recommended burnishing the edges that hang over and re-iron the now curled over edge. Adding this step worked much better.

I am very proud and the wife is very happy.
