    Wild Cherry Bowl

    Good afternoon all

    Some of you will recall that I posted a while ago about a show in November for which I took a number of orders for bowls. The first one was delivered today, and thankfully it is the only one that had to be done by Christmas! I had a similar bowl on the table for display which had already been sold. I probably could have had five or six and they would have sold the way people were after it. As it is I still have two more to make. Here are some pictures for your surfing enjoyment.

    <img src="http://www.enter.net/~ultradad/wildcherry01.jpg">

    This bowl is just over 10" wide and 5 1/4" high. I got the log from a crew which was logging off a farmer's fence rows in preparation for turning the land into a highway interchange. This stuff is full of sap pockets, small bark inclusions, and is prone to checking, but it makes for great ornamental (or should I say art?) pieces.

    This bowl was finished with Watco Danish oil and buffed with a Beall wheel. Thanks for taking a peek. Oh, some of you may notice a small nick in the rim. It is from a bark inclusion. The display bowl had a small defect in the rim as well, that one from a small branch. I could have turned the rim down just a hair more and removed it, but the display bowl drew so many comments of interest in having that small defect in the rim that I left it in this rim as well.

    Outstanding turning, Bill. That's one beautiful piece of wood, especially once you got done with it! More! More! More!

    Happy Holidays!

    WOW! Very nice work, as usual Bill. I wish I had a few logs from every Wild Cherry I have cut down and burnt for firewood over the years...........I would have about a housefull! I have a fairly large Cherry at my Folks house that Dad has been on me to take down since fall. Being that I am off work until after the first of the year, I plan on getting to that right after Christmas. (The beautiful bowl you shared with us just put that project on the fast track!) Simply wonderful Bowl Bill..............beautiful wood and perfect execution as well. Thanks for sharing your work again...........inspiring as always. Wishing the Grumbine Family a wonderful Holiday Season, and a Healthy and Happy New Year!

    Good morning all

    Thanks for your kinds words on my work. This one was a squeaker, as I was not sure it was going to either be done or survive for its intended recipient.

    Ron, I'm not sure why you couldn't see it, but I hope the problem has since been remedied.

    Kevin, cherry is one of my favorite woods for turning, and I think wild cherry even more so that black cherry. It can be troublesome though, as it has a real tendency to crack. Good luck with that big tree.

    Merry Christmas, and as we say here in PA Dutch Country, Hallicher Grishdaag!

    I loved it when I first saw it

    & the more I look at it the more I like it. I think that is a sign of a truly great design & you nailed it Bill. If mine turns out anywhere near as nice as this one it will occupy a prominant place in the Sweeney homestead. Thanks for sharing.

    Merry Christmas to you & all the lady Grumbines!

    Wow

    If life is a bowl of cherries, then that bowl has lots of life. Great looking piece Bill. Fruit woods are always so neat when they are turned.

    Mmmmmmmm, Bill, for a guy who doesn't do "art" bowls, I thought, you certainly do a pretty good job of it.
