That's one I haven't tried, but if it's leather (cowhide) it should work. The problem is the shape, but you should be able to stay in focus enough if you limit it to about 1"-1.25" square area. Ask them for an old practice ball to try it out on.

There are two other problems. 1. The leather is about 1/64" thick so it's easy to cut through it; 2. Because you have to use such low power it's hard to get a good contrast.

I have done baseballs, but only Text and dates. I am
not sure about pictures, since you go out of focus quickly.
I used the cardboard center from a roll of tape to set up.
