    Bocote and Malachite Fountain Pen

    Hi,

Another pen I was working on and finally took some time to make a picture of it. The pen kit is an El Grande fountain pen purchased at Lee Valley. The blank is a bocote. I turned it as a solid end pen, using a pen mandrel from William Woodwrite.

I like the string wood grain in this blank, I added a 10 mm malachite cabochon for a finished detail

The finish is sanding to 400 then Mylands friction polish then microcrystalline wax for a final polish.

    All critiques are welcomed
    Take care,
    Jim

Jim that is a beauty. I really like the wood. The accent piece is awesome. Nice job.

    Jim,
I really like the pen. How do you do the solid end?

    Jim,

Nice pen! Bocote is a really nice pen wood. What did you stick in the end?

    beautiful work, Jim

I just received my mandrel, and haven't had time to do a closed end yet. It's nice to see how it can turn out.

    Thanks Mark,

I used a pen mandrel that is like a pin chuck. They now are starting to make these mandrels sized for specific kits, this one works on El Grande and Ligero's.

You have to drill the depth to support the ink cartridge and then glue in the tube....the secret is to know how deep to drill and to not turn into that space..

Most commeon depths are 2 7/8"

    Hope that helps
    Take care,
    Jim
