I'm getting old fast but still finishing is the weakest link of my woodworking. Could someone simply give me some yes or no to the following:
1. can I use shellac over Watco danish oil
2.Can I use deft sealer and deft over shellac
3. Can I use deft seal and deft over Watco Danish oil
4. The directions clain after 72 hrs can use poly.agree? water or oil

Yes.

Yes, but why use the Deft Sealer and the shellac? Both perform the same function. Use the Deft sealer and you will be assured you don't have compatability problems.

Yes, as long as the Watco is fully dry about 5-7 days. Again, why the sealer?

The directions on what? How did the poly get into the equation?

What do you really want to do? Watco is intended to be a complete finish--not over coated with something else. It contains both an oil and a varnish. If you want to get the figure popping that Watco gives, use just plain boiled linseed oil. It's the linseed oil in Watco that gives the color.

As far as a "sealer", the first coat of the final finish acts as a "sealer". Just thin it with the appropriate thinner and apply it. In most cases there is no need for a shellac or other product as a sealer.

Again, the can of what? In other words which material had the comments about poly?

I agree with Howard. With regard to shellac, I once heard Jeff Jewitt say "shellac sticks to anything and anything sticks to shellac". It tends to be the sealer / wash coating that I reach for first as I love it's working properties.
