Recently every time I visit SMC I discover that I have to get a new password. What am I doing wrong?

Your cookies got stale. I have no idea why this happens, but it does. The solution is to go to your cookies and delete all the ones for SMC, without SMC open, then open SMC. You will need to log in one more time and that should fix the problem as long as your computer is set to accept cookies.
