    Spraying transtint dyes

I'm wanting to try to spray some transtint dye. I typically just wipe on dye but I'm doing a large bookcase and would like to spray it.

Could I just mix it with Target USL and spray coats until I get the color I want? Or would the USL block the dye from going into the wood.

If that will not work let me know what you do to spray dye. I'm using a Devilbiss Finishline HVLP if that matters.

    Thanks in advance

I've used denatured alcohol as a carrier for Transint, and sprayed it with an HVLP rig. It works much better than wiping. You can get a much more uniform application.

You can mix with the USL, creating a toner. The effect will be slightly different because the dye will remain in the finish layers. You can also spray the dye itself in less concentrated form and build it up with several applications. You can do this since without the need to wipe the first coats aren't disturbed by the subsequent coats. In this case, you do end up applying all the dye directly on the wood. You can also start with dye directly on the wood, and make fine adjustments with dye as a toner in the USL. Lots of flexibility when you spray.
