    Turner needs handtool advice

I ussually hangout in the turners forum but maybe you guys can help me.

I have taken to carving flutes in a spiral on my Hollowforms and bowls. It really quite easily done with a round bastard file. As I practice this process I need to know more about file and rasps to hopefully speed things up.

I need a source for round files to at least 1/2" diameter. Ideas?

Why are files in my local hardware store $5 or less yet when I look on a few websites they can be $80 or more?

How are files rated for aggresiveness of cut?

Your info may help me find the right tools with out wasting too much money.

    Thanks
    Frank

Been a couple decades since I had to buy one, but round rasps in the size you are looking for are common.

The for finer cuts, google Simonds and Nichols, the major file maufacturers, and see what they make these days in coarse round files. Then find a distributor that does mail order. Mine is Stellar Industrial Supply, Everett, WA, 253-393-1228.

The coarse rasp followed by a bastard or 2d-cut file followed by sandpaper on a dowel turned to size should work well.
“Perhaps then, you will say, ‘But where can one have a boat like that built today?’ And I will tell you that there are still some honest men who can sharpen a saw, plane, or adze...men (who) live and work in out of the way places, but that is lucky, for they can acquire materials for one third of city prices. Best, some of these gentlemen’s boatshops are in places where nothing but the occasional honk of a wild goose will distract them from their work.” -- L Francis Herreshoff
