Hello all! Joined SMC when good friend Marvin told me about it and have enjoyed it a lot, maybe for about the past year or so. I like the friendliness and the variety of posts, everyone is mostly positive and informative, makes for a very nice visit. I have two lathes, one was my Dad's, a little Wood Wizard made in about I'd guess 1938. My husband built a terrific, sturdy bench for it, mounted the motor, and it runs fine. About a 7" throw and 32" length bed. Then we bought a VB36 about 5 years ago, beautiful machine and will turn anything. So I use both pretty much all the time. Right now my piano student has an Ash bowl on the little lathe he's turning and I have a big Cherry blank on the big lathe. It's lots of fun! I think the thread is fine and a nice idea just to get to know people better or put a face with a name. Thanks! Jude

    Hi,

    I joined SMC 12-09-06

My son, Glenn, introduced me to the site.

What I enjoy most is an extremely difficult question. I just seem to like the entire thing. It is fun to chat. It is great to get answers to questions and it is a pleasure to be able to provide information occasionally to people who ask questions.

My lathe is new to me---have not even stuck a piece of wood in it yet.
It is an old, in excellent condition, Delta 46-140.

    Capacity 11" x 36"

I just took a two day course on woodturning and plan to sign up for the Palomar College woodturning class which starts in August. I understand that it is excellent. Until the two day class I had never used a woodlathe so I am really a newbe.

Personal: born 12-31-1925. I think I am the oldest SMC member---Now that is a horrible thought!!! Reside Oceanside, Calif.

    Enjoy,

    Jim

    When did you join SMC?
Joined SMC in the beginning of October of 2006.
How did you find out about this site?
Found SMC quite by chance when doing a blanket search for anything woodturning! Hung out on the sidelines for months until I realized that I could learn more through participation.
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
The people - the talent - and the way everyone is willing to help each other learn! Constantly amazed with the creativity of all the folks here on SMC!
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
    2006 Jet 1642 EVS 2 hp
    What is your lathe's capacity?
So far it has been capable of doing everything I have thrown at it - some spindle work, lots of bowls and now it's doing just great with hollow forms! Oh - max of 16" for facework - 42" for spindle work.

    • When did you join SMC? August, 2006
    • How did you find out about this site? A friend and Creeker Rick Levine called me one night and told me to check it out because it has a laser forum
    • What do you enjoy the most about SMC? The camaradarie, the friends I've made and met, the talent, the encouragement from fellow Creekers whom I've never met, and just seeing all the beautiful stuff that the other "masters" show off
    • What is the make, model and year of your lathe? I have two. One is a WoodTek mini, purchased in summer of 2006. The other is a vintage Atlas, inherited from my father-in-law and purchased new by him in the early 50s.
    • What is your lathe's capacity? The Woodtek has a 10" swing and 17" between centers; it's a 6-speed (non-VS ). The Atlas has a 12" swing--don't know distance between center.
