    • When did you join SMC?
      • Joined in July of 07, lurked for a year prior
    • How did you find out about this site?
      • Recommended by a friend, but found it via Freedom Pen Project
    • What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
      • Good mix of skill levels, lots of opinions shared freely without flaming or whining. Almost like there should be a sign on the front page that opinions and thoughts are welcome, that "we play nice".
    • What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
      • Jet 1236, purchased sort of used (returned for upgrade after 3 weeks of gentle use) in 2006
      • Carba-Tec mini (old black body model), in my possession since 1994, probably 10 or more years older than that
      • Shopsmith, 1992, but had a clone purchased in 1984 or so until 2005
    • What is your lathe's capacity?
      • Jet is 12 over bed
      • Carba-Tec is 10 over bed, but better with smaller
      • Shopsmith says it'll take up to 16", but I'll borrow my buddy's Jet or PM for stuff that size, thank you very much!
Shopsmith was used for a lot of years for turning as well as everything else. Hasn't been turning much since the Jet came to live. Works pretty well with new bearings on the quill. Very, very little run out, but still doesn't have the heft and balance of even the 1236 Jet. Even using 80 pounds of sand it's not as good as the Jet.

How did you find out about this site?
Just ran across it when doing turning browsing and searching
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
Don't know yet, but it sure is fun to see other people's lathes.
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
It's a patternmaker's lathe made by Rollstone Machine Works, Fitchburg, MA, probably in the 1880s. They went out of business around 1890.
    What is your lathe's capacity?
24" swing with about 6.5 feet between centers.

I am currently in the process of purchasing another lathe, an Oliver. It was designed for metal spinning, but it will be great for wood too. Hopefully I can post its picture in the near future.

    1962 Powermatic Model 45 - The Beast

    When did you join SMC?
I joined SMC about a year ago when I first started buying some older machinery and wanting to learn as much as I could about it.
How did you find out about this site?
Surfing the net looking for parts.
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
The best thing to me about this site is the comprehensive knowledge base of the members. It doesn't matter what your question or problem is; somebody here knows the answer. Everyone here appreciates photo's of each other's work and has words of encouragement.
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
    Powermatic, model 45, 1962
    Delta, 45-715, 2005
    What is your lathe's capacity?
The PMatic has a capacity of 16" over gap, 14" over ways, and 40" between centers.
The Delta is 14" over the bed and 40" point to point - and will be for sale in a week or so.

    When did you join SMC?
I guess it was around August of 2007, after I bought my lathe.
How did you find out about this site?
I believe I was exploring the "other forum..." you know... over there, which led my to the Freedom Pens Project, which led me here.
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
All the friendly, experienced people that have great advice for an inexperienced novice. Also, the fact that I can ask a question and have an answer within a half hour is pretty good!
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
It is a el-cheapo PSI Turncrafter Plus Variable Speed. (A couple years, a couple thousand dollars, and a couple more square feet later, she might become a PM 3520 or a JET 1642.)
    What is your lathe's capacity?
    Specifications:
    • Motor: 1/4HP 750-3200 RPM
    • Headstock: 3/4" x 16tpi w/ #1MT
    • Construction: Cast Iron
    • Wt: Portable at 43lbs
    • Overall size: 25-1/2"L x 5"W x 12"H
    • Swing over bed: 7-1/2 "
    • 12-1/2" between centers
    Many Extras! Purchase includes:
    • 4-1/2" and 7" Toolrests
    • 2" Faceplate
    • #1MT Spur Center
    • Live Tailstock Center
    • Knockout Bar and Wrench

I just copied and pasted that. The swing is a little less if you want to position the toolrest underneath your work for roughing out a bowl blank, and (Warning- rant) the 7" toolrest broke. Yes... steel, cracked in half.

    Here she is...

How did you find out about this site?
Posts on another woodworking forum site.

What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
The people - I consider them all friends and really enjoy the serious and not so serious responses to our questions - frindly banter, but very helpful along with all the fun!

What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
    I have 3.
    A Turncraft (Penn State Industries) mini lathe 8" x 20" (2003)
    A Harbor Frieght 12" x 36" Jet knock-off (2005)
    A Sears/Dunlap 10" x 36" antique lathe (1950)

    What is your lathe's capacity?
    See above question.

I got started turning due to guys on here like, Ken Salisbury & the Freedom Pen Project. this has been one of my favorite places to hang out and talk turning and all woodworking as well.

I don't have a picture of my lathes on this computer, so I will have to transfer some over and then I'll edit this post and show them off.

I'm here ya old bubblehead. And git yer butt off Janine.

Well, if you can drag pics up from the depths of obscurity, so can I.

The first one is one of Mr. Clabo furiously turning the only thing he's ever turned; and the second one needs no explanation, except to Janine.
