    Deffective Drill Bits?

I purchased a boxed set of drill bits (5/64" - 1/2"). The bits are good up to the 3/8" size. But the 8 bits larger than 3/8" have a problem, I think. For these bits, the drill bit shank is reduced to 3/8" to fit 3/8" chucks. But the shanks are not cylindrical. The very end of the shank is larger in diameter than where the shank meets the working end of the bit. For example, the end of the shank is 0.3785 and the other end of the shank is 0.3625. I'm having a hard time chucking them up straight.

Has anyone heard of drill bits made this way on purpose? I've never really measured drill bit shanks before. Never had a reason to.

The market place is full of defective cheap end drill bits, all made in a country famous for poor quality. Chuck them ......... out, not up!

Return them to point of sale.

I bought a 115 piece set once, and they just threw in whatever they had on hand to fill the ranks. I returned them.

Been there. Gave up on cheap bits. I got the message of just how cheap one set was. I called customer service to arrange a return; they credited back my money and said to just keep the bits. I use 'em for beaters.

Thanks for the replies. I was pretty sure that they were junk.

They came from Lee Valley. I think they will make good on them.
