    Price of 8/4 Macassar Ebony?

I can get some Macassar Ebony boards most are 8/4 up to 12/4 and 5" to 12" wide with lengths of 7' to 9'. The boards look great, I don't really know if they were kiln dried or air (no checks or defects) they look to be square and rough surfaced on all sides. I'll try and get some pics. should I spend the $30+ bf on them? I'd love to make something to pass down to my kids with it

I think Krenov's approach to lumber buying was this... if you find a good deal on great lumber then buy as much as you can afford, then buy 25% more.

    Last time I priced it....

was about 6 yrs. ago. I seem to remember about $38.00/bdft. If the old checking account can stand it, go for it. It is beautiful stuff. Watch for splinters.

I was brousing(and salivating) at Crosscut Hardwoods in Seattle a few weeks ago and their Macasar Ebony was $59 bft. Sounds lke you have a great opportunity.

If you can get Macassar Ebony in those thicknesses and widths. Buy it.
If you decide you don't want to buy it. Please PM me, and I'll buy them.

This is a great deal. A while ago Crosscut Hardwoods had it for $45/bd ft and I thought that was a deal. I have enough ebony so I did not get any, though I probably should have. The stuff is an appreciating asset so buy and use or sell as you wish.

All sounds too good to be true.

In Boise, ID ...the ebony will run you $60-80 bd/ft and there's no way I could find anything that wide or long. Those are some pretty large peices of ebony?!

    Got it

Me and a buddy went in together on all of it. It was "scrap" from an jet manufacturer (they use all sorts of exotic woods on the interiors). Now I just need to figure out what to make with it

Sealed bid auction, we go it for $750 for about 150 bf (I think, about 12 boards 8/4 to 12/4, 5 to 7 wide, 7' to 9' long)

Congratulations--what a buy- $5/bft? It had to take some real stones
to go that low--Did beads of sweat cross your forehead waiting
    for the results--?

$5/bf for ebony... I'll gladly give you $10/bf for it. Nice score.

I don't know where you are located James, but you probably now have one of the largest inventories of Macassar Ebony in your area. Those are very big pieces.
I had 6 planks last winter that were 4/4, 4" to 7" wide, and 3'- 4' long. I needed one more plank. I called every exotic wood dealer in New England to find a suitable piece of material. Turned out that I had more Macassar Ebony than they did!!
    Nice score, nice score indeed!!!

I'm next in line behind Steve

it is a great deal. but you better check the MC on it before use. that thick will take a long time to acclimate. you could but it and resell it on ebay and make some bucks too if you can't afford it all.
