    Rubbing out enamel

Can it be done? Alkyd enamel.

Some backgroud that may suggest another solution if rubbing out is not possible: I'm building bookcases/cabinets, and sprayed alkyd enamel on the cabinet top before installing. Beautiful finish until I dropped a clamp on it, leaving two nice dent, one cracking the paint film and the other mainly denting it. Was able to steam them to nearly level, but it still is not acceptable to my customer (and wife). Spraying in place and disassembly to spray offsite are not options.Wife wants me to fill, sand, and just brush another coat of enamel. I hate to lose the nice level sprayed finish. was thinking of doing a spot repair, then sand the whole top with 1000 to 1500 grit paper, then use rubbing compound.

Top is fully cured, but how long would I need to let repair cure if rubbing out is feasible?

    Other repair ideas?

You should be able to do it. The longer you can wait before starting the rub out the better. The enamel will continue to harden for a month, and for rubbing the harder the better.
