    White Birch HF

A While ago, someone (on another site) commented on how figured the wood in my turnings was...
Made me wonder if the wood was doing the work, and that MAYBE I was relying on the wood to make my work look good, SOOooooo
I have been turning some "plain wood" pieces to get a better look at my turning.
    Diameter: 5 inches
    Height: 3 1/4
Oil sanded and finished with water based poly.

    George,

I have always found your work to be outstanding regardless of the "figure" of the stock you had to work with. The turner can enhance the elegance of a piece of wood, but the wood can never enhance the skill of a turner.

    Excellent work.

George I don't think that the wood is the guilty one here. While the wood is very nice I believe that your expertice is the star of the show. Very nice form and finish.

That's a beautiful piece, George, both form and finish.

Great form and finish George! Let there be NO doubt - the skill is in your hands - not the wood!

I will agree with the rest. The hole package looks great even the photos look great. Indeed a burl on more figured wood could make the piece more interesting but again a poor turned piece is not going to be rescued by the figure, it would be an unattractive from on a great piece of wood.
    Congrats.

George, try one end grain and see what happens. It may give you another perspective one will not notice when doing them edge grain. Nice work on this one though. The finish is perfect and the shape is classic.
