    Toothpickless holder

I made a couple of the toothpick holders for my wife right after I got the Wood magazine. After seeing the two posted here I'm keeping that dog on the porch. Those are both very nice and beyond my skill level.

I am going to be brave enough to post a take off from that idea. Hey, when you're a beginner you have to take an idea wherever you can get it.

This box is from willow oak with a walnut finial. Willow oak is often mistakenly called pin oak around here. The conventional wisdom is that it's useless. I saw some occasionally for stacking blocks. Noticed some that had been around for a few years weren't checked or cracked like they usually are so I decided to turn something out of it.

Chuck that is a great looking holder. I had never heard of willow oak but have heard of pin oak. I like your finial. Well done.

That is very pretty, Chuck! And good for you for recycling the wood. Have made lots of stuff from pallet wood and "shipping timbers". Sometimes (like your piece), there is beautiful wood inside a nasty old chunk.

Chuck, you've got a nice box there, nothing to be timid about.

Chuck, that looks great, that is some beautiful oak. Don't hesitate on making the toothpick holder, you've got the hard part whipped
