    Father & Son Pens

We have our Scroll Saw Christmas party (we got snowed out in December) on Saturday and we do a White Elephant gift exchange. Has to be something you made. I did a Atlas Wave pen so I could say I used a Scroll Saw on it (gifts don't have to be scrolled though).

Josh (11 yr old) decided to go with me since brother has a basketball game an hour away. I told him if he wanted to be in the exchange he'd have to make something so he did a pen. The Euro Pen is his pen. I had glued up a bunch of cut-off throw aways a while back with some Black Graphite Epoxy (for building golf clubs) that was getting old. I was wondering how it might show up... I kinda like the black line effect.

Josh said he'd like to use that and the Blackwood. Then he wanted it cut at an angle then re-glued. So I made the blanks for him. And he did the rest from there. Very nice pen. Kinda hoping I win it back at the party.

Congrats Jon. You should be proud. Pens look great. Tell Josh well done.

Really nice work, as always, Jon. And I do like the black epoxy on your son's pen.

Rasmus: I assume that Jon cut the blank apart on a scroll saw in a wavey pattern, and glued in strips of wood veneer...

That's pretty much it, Ben. I was going to do a quick and easy tutorial on it... forgot to. Next time I do one I will.

Thanks everyone, I'm looking forward to tomorrow at the party.

Both of you did a great job!

I like the idea of the graphite epoxy.

The party was great and we all had a wonderful time. The folks loved the pens we did. But there was some really nice gifts made this year, top quality craftmanship/artistry. Josh got a Sawblade clock and I got an ornament with a $20 gift certificate to the Hardwood Store/Rockler Store where our group meets. A few Scrollers want me to do a demo of the Wave Pen for one of our meetings this year.
