    Ikon Medal

    Hi All
I have been contacted by the local club to do a medal for their frolic.
the pic below is the finish product.
the brass and bronze were not bad to cut the stainless was interesting.
If we agree on a price they want 150 of them

    Ken,

More importantly tell us what you think.

You are probably the only one here that has used the ikon product, what do you think?

I like the appearance of your work but I think you'll find that there are less expensive ways to get medals made in that quantity.

I've tried Ikon metal so I'd be interested in your view.

    ikonmedal

    Keith and Mike

all three pieces of product are their. Brass, Bronze, and Stainless
the brass and bronze engraved nicely with no issue but the stainless
thru a bunch of sparks. This was not an issue but sure was interesting.
It engraved very nicely with great detail that I'm sure will stay for a long time.
I plan to do a few more samples in the next few days.

What I need to do is find a way to polish these.
I had wet sanded these to get it to this point but a higher gloss is possible

    Mike
their are always other ways to do things but this is advertised to be laser engravable so I had to try it. their is no easy way to make these medals.
    Its all work.

Based on my limited experience with Ikon metal the job you're trying to do can be done for less money and you don't have to do any work. And I wouldn't be surprised if your price won't be lower and your profit better.

    Ken,

The medals look great. Tell me about the process and what is involved, also the price per piece for materials.

I have some customers that price is never a primary issue so if the timeline from start to finish isn't to bad it may be worth considering.

    Ikonmedals

    Keith
The price per piece unengraved looks to be about One Dollar.
the run time is about 3 minutes.
that is with the engraving and one vector cut.
Since my laser is 35W I've had to make a second vector cut
to go the whole way thru. ( they like 50W or larger)
Still had no problems and it looks like on their 6x8 piece I can get
12 pieces. I'm going to cost out the larger piece to see if its a better deal.

In my humble non-experienced laser fun time I think Ikonmetal has a lot
of potential and I plan to experiment more to see what graphics and text
    I can get.

I'll post more as play time allows.

if their is any more questions I'll try to answer.

Keith did that answer your questions?

    Kenneth,

When I visited the home of IKON Metal this summer, they recommend the following:

    Some helpful suggestions by Bill
    - their material has a protective coating on it and after lasering a quick buff on a buffing wheel or using elbow grease will really shine up the piece.
    - on their brass and bronze products, they need to be sealed with a quick spray coat of poly, otherwise will tarnish. If used outside multiple coats of a "duocoat?" will protect them, they have product on the roof for two years submitted to the harsh northern MN winters and the heat of the summer with no ill effects.
    - you will want to color fill, there is little contrast.

    What Thickness?

    Ken,

How thick is the Iknometal? I ask, because I heard they have an 1/8" sheet which costs less than the original thickness, which was, I believe, 1/4" thick.

People have done some pretty neat things with Ikonmetal, including jewelry items. They also have a contest for the best use of Ikonmetal, with the winner being announced at the ARA International Awards Market at the end of this month.

We've used Ikon for various jobs. They are phasing out the .25" material, when that's gone only the .125" thick material will be available.

    material

    The Ikonmetal I used is .1875 ( 3/16 )
and it looks like you are right the next order will be .125
that explains why they lowered the price. ( less material )
will have to order some soon to start making metals.

    3-d!?!?!?

Don't want to start the debate of 3-D engraving with the laser again, but did want to know if anyone has tried the 3-D settings with Ikon Metal to see how well it will work.

    Thanks...
