I didn't want to hijack Jay's outfeed table thread so I started something new.

I am building a 4x4 table similar to his soon. I plan on using a torsion box top, partly since the current one I have isn't flat anymore and to double as a second assembly spot.

I have to thoughts for the top.

1: Use 3/4 MDF and route in the miter slots and not worry about it. The grid should add plenty of strength and keep the top stable.

2: Use 1/2 MDF (same as my other box) and then add a 3/4 melamine top that is secured with a few brads. The hardwood edges would be raised to include this top. Similar to Mark Spagnolo's (is that right?) box with a hardboard top only thicker.

I have the melamine top as part of the existing table so I wouldn't have to buy any extra so cost is really a non issue.

Anyone done either of these? Any pro's or cons before I start breaking into it? FWIW I am leaning heavily toward option two currently.

Thanks

Joe
