    Modifying a Spindle Gouge?

Would there be any problems if I ground a 1" spindle gouge to a 1" bowl gouge?

Any comments or recommendations would be appreciated!

    Thank you,

    Fred

It really doesn't work that way. The difference is not just the shape of the end.
If it is a spindle roughing gouge (looks like a big U) I would not recommend using it on a bowl ever. The tang can snap off and cause bodily harm. A spindle gouge that is made from round bar can be used on a bowl in some cases though.
The long and the short of it is- if you want a bowl gouge get a bowl gouge. Trying to use the wrong tool will just be frustrating and sometimes dangerous.

Thanks Kevin, that was my concern - safety - I realize the cross sections were different - just an idea I was thinking about...

    Modifying spindle gauge!

I ground the end of a 1 in spindle gauge straight across, Nd use it as a roughing gauge on spindle work. I will NOT use it on a Bowl.
