A question about Scale on Norms Regency HB

    Good evening.

I am in the very beginning stages of building Norm's Regency headboard, and I am adding a footboard of similar design. The original can be seen here:

I have purchased the plans for the headboard. My question is this: I am building a double, as opposed to the queen which is outlined in the plans.

Is it necessary that I scale all dimensions down by a proportionate amount since I am reducing the overall size of the headboard as compared to its original design?

My fear is that the posts, stiles, etc... will have too much of a heavy look to them if I leave them in the original dimensions.

    Thanks!

    Proportion

    Irv,
IMO, there is not that much difference in the widths of the two beds to require changing the size of the posts. That being said, you can back yourself up by building the arch top panel first, and then holding up an original size post and then judge for yourself. I do think that you will have to shorten the height of the arch, in order to maintain the proportions of width v. length on the headboard/footboard. Good Luck!

Thanks Kurt. I had not considered the overall height. I guess I was thinking of stock dimensions etc.... I think I may play with it some in sketchup to see what I can come up with and then go back to making a model.

    Thanks.

Creating a SketchUp model from a photograph.

    Irv,

Here are two tutorials I found useful when modeling a project from a photo.

Follow steps 1-5 in this tutorial and you’ll be able to scale the photograph in SketchUp to actual dimensions.

The attached SketchUp file is useful in many applications and will allow you to easily replicate/alter the posts. Use the photo as a template to outline ˝ of the post's profile and then follow the steps outlined in this tutorial.

If you know an easier way, please share.
