Thread: 100A sub panel wire size

I just installed a 100 amp sub panel in the second floor of my house. The wire I used is 4-conductor 2ga. copper romex. I sometimes use aluminum for service entrance but generally not inside of the building.

Buying quality wire is pretty much like buying tools and lumber. Sometimes it is best to buy a better grade from the get-go. It often saves time and money in the long run.

Regardless of what is safe, and what is not. Your local inspector has the final word. What is ok in one state and locality, will not fly in others.

The local inspectors here in Virginia Beach are very informative and helpfull.

I did a upgrade from a 120 amp to a 200 amp for my house and it failed inspection the first time. I asked him if he could refer me to the code issue we were dealing with so I could get my electrician squared away. He went by Office Max and burned me the copies of the pages. My electrician ended up redoing alot of the work.
