Question Can this plane be salvaged?

    Good evening shavings makers
Please see the attached photo of the sole of a #5 Bailey plane that I inherited. Notice the rough edge on the aft end of the mouth of the plane. Can I salvage this or even use this plane....obviously I am a newbie. The rest of the plane seems fairly good for the age (?).
    Thanks

I don't think it make fine shaving anymore, but it never hurts to try. On the flip side, you could try to turn it into a scrub plane.

Sure, it will work just fine. The blade doesn't even touch the back of the throat if the frog is adjusted for a tighter mouth. For that matter, the throat can be set pretty wide, and the blade will still not touch the back. Have fun with it.

I'm with Steve and Tom on this one. Go for it.

    Can this plane be salvaged?

I have a 9 1/2 block that has the same problem and it still cuts beautiful. I too thought it would be a serious problem but it hasn't so far.
