    Thanks to all who replied, I found a fair deal (to me) on some 5/4 soft Maple at $1.50/bf so I'm going with that.

    I think that is a fair deal to just about anyone. I don't normally get 4/4 poplar for that cost.

    Soft maple is tough enough you can probably get 1/2 sides out of that if you are careful.
