Ash is the traditional bat material. Normally turned from a single blank of 3"x3" Ash. I was trying to remember what vendor actually sells Ash bat blanks.
    Thanks & Happy Wood Chips,

The best is either ash or hard maple in a solid billet. Ash will be a bit cheaper than maple. For that age, most bats seem to be -10 to -14. This means they are 10 to 14 oz lighter than they are long. If you made a 28 inch bat, you would want it to be 18 oz or so. That's a pretty standard little league bat. 2.25 inch barrel is pretty common for little league and softball. Softball bats are -10, I think. You would have to check specifics for that age group. I've made about a dozen or so bats. I would recommend "renting" one from a sporting goods store for measurements for the first bat. I've ordered my billets through gonebatty.net and have had no trouble.

The only thing I know is that Rockler sells bat blanks in both maple and ash. I think they run around $28 each.
If I could ever finish working on my shop, maybe I could find the time to start working in my shop.
