    Heat resistance

I have some T&G ash that I plan to install very near a wood stove that gets a lot of use. The area currently has some 1970's stained/finished paneling that seems to have held up well. Another adjacent area has 1 year-old paint that also seems to be holding up well.

Just a quick question: Do I need to be concerned about heat resistance when choosing a finish? What about when choosing a grain filler? Any advice or suggestions would be very welcome.

    Maybe.

If the item is installed according to code it should be fine. Key word being "should".

Most finishes have something in the data about heat resistance but I don't know any off the top of my head.

The references I looked at say - for heat resistance - varnishes are good. Shellac and lacquer, not so good. Oil finishes - medium. Two-part, conversion finishes - also good.

Just since I was curious about the finishes I use I did some looking at Target's user forum.

Jeff Weiss (the head dog) says that USL is fine for moderate heat (120-200 degrees) but should avoid steam.

EM8000CV is listed as being a stronger finish for such applications.
