    Bed Post Extension

My boss bought a footboard on sale for $30 (very nice footboard) but he wants to give it to his son for one of their wedding gifts as a headboard. Needless to say it has to be raised up to accomadate this need. The legs are in the shape of an octagon (hollow, eight pieces glued together) like the picture below.

Any ideas on what might work and look good?

I'd do more of the same. That is, I'd glue up an octagonal blank from oak, turn it to look like more of the post, and figure out how to fasten it to the existing leg. Probably some of the extension would fit up inside the existing hollow post.

We might provide better suggestions if you'll tell us

    * approximately the dimensions you're talking. What's the post diameter, and how tall are the extensions you want?

    * what tools you have available. For instance, do you have a lathe capable of turning the extension?
