    Shop Cabinets

It doesn't matter if your shop is large or small, effective shop cabinets can double your workspace. Having everything right at your fingertips while you are working sure makes building your projects fun and easy.

The first thing every visitor who walks in the door of my shop asks is, "Where did you get all the shop cabinets?" Over the years I have built a couple of dozen shop cabinets to suit various hobbies and part-time jobs of mine, but now that I am fully retired they are still quite handy to have around. I admit that there are now a few empty drawers that used to hold parts that I manufactured, but they will eventually be used again. Isn't it amazing how our accumulated "stuff" expands to fill whatever space is available?

All of these home-made cabinets use the same simple construction methods. The cabinets in the shop have exposed plywood edges, and frankly I think that they look quite nice. For any of the projects I've built that go in the house, solid hardwood was used for the face frames. Of course we are all free to choose our own methods and do what makes us happy.

Most of my shop cabinets were easy to build weekend projects, started on Friday evening and put into use on Sunday. Projects that are fast and easy to build are always popular with everyone.

I did post a shop tour a year ago, before I there was a Workshops forum, so you may have seen a couple of the photos before, but most are newer photos. These projects are simple cabinets that suited my shop, and hopefully the photos may give you a couple of ideas on ways to help your shop. Notice that in my shop I have eliminated all space wasting "machinery stands" and replaced them with cabinets that do double duty. My philosophy is no matter what size your shop is, every square inch is precious and you can't afford to waste any room that can be used for other things.

Please enjoy, and thanks for looking!

    thanks Tom.

as a hobbyist, its IMO ... VERY important to have a place for stuff. first of all there are things you dont use very often and you spend forever remembering where you put it last ... and not being able to find something takes away from the reason I go to the basement.

the time I find myself working on shop cabinets is in that 'foggy' time when i just need to do SOMETHING ...

    thanks for sharing.

    Tom,

Great shop! When I got to the photo of the hinged router table top I had to pause. Never thought to add tool trays. That's on my list for this afternoon.

Thanks for the tour of a truly beautiful shop.

    Best!

    Smile I'm inspired

Thanks for sharing your photos, Tom. I found a lot of inspiration in those, particularly with your router table with the hinged top. I'm in the process of building a series of cabinets for my home shop (the attached picture is the first one, my drill press stand), so I hope you don't mind me stealing the idea for my router table!
