Mantle inspiration

We are putting in a wood burning fireplace in a corner and are going with a stone veneer face. I'm looking for ideas on the mantle shelf, I've seen quite a few fireplace surrounds but thats not what I'm after. We're looking for more of a country/rustic look to it with just a shelf. Been contemplating a simple box type that would look like a solid slab when finished.


Any ideas?

Here's one I built a few years back for a customer. It was not a kit and it's all made of poplar. It incorporates a bookcase to. I also did the tile on the fireplace face.
