    Finish for Urns?

What type of finish would you guys suggest for cremation urns?
Time is an issue, I would need the finish to be done and cured in about 2 days or sooner if possible.
I was going to use birch.
    Thanks for your help.

Are you set up to spray? Target's Hybrivar is designed for rapid cure.

I've been really pleased with the results I've been getting with Birchwood-Casey's Tru-Oil. According to the label, it's a linseed oil based product with a variety of other stuff in it. Unlike plain linseed oil or BLO, this stuff dries in about an hour or two. So it's entirely possible to put three coats on a piece in day.

What I've been doing, with my pieces is the following:

    • Apply a coat of Tru-Oil and wait for it to dry.
    • Apply a second coat by rubbing it in with 400 or 600 grit sand paper.
    • Apply a third coat, again with 400 or 600 grit sand paper.
    • After the third coat has dried, if there's any roughness wet sand with 600 grit and mineral spirits.
    • Finish it off with a paste wax.

Shellac could be applied and ready by noon tomorrow, and if you want a film finish would be an excellent looking choice.

Shellac or a water borne would be my choice for this and frankly, most projects. Both will give you fast, multi-coat results.

Thank you guys for the advice!
I will try them all on a sample piece to see which I like the best, well all except spraying, I am not set up for that.

If you go for shellac, you can buy it in a spray bomb and it's perfect for smaller project pieces like this.
