I was messing around looking at boat designs as something new to try. I came across a bunch of plywood designs. Some were from 2 sheets, some 1.5 sheets, and some from only 1 sheet. Anybody ever do one from plywood, especially 1 sheet? Some 1 sheeters looked like a pretty nice small lake fishing boat actually. It looks pretty interesting. Never did any boat building before, so if I would try it's brand new.

Yes, the sheet boats are interesting.
In particular, I like the mouse boats. My biggest problem with them is me, all 270 lbs worth.
That said, some of the sheet boats would be really easy to put together and offer alot of fun for the buck.
So, which one is your favorite?

The prism, and the dug are really tempting when with 1 sheet. These look like just pure FUN!!! The portugese style dinghy (1.5 sheets) is looking like a nice small fishing boat. Haven't acted on anything yet. Here's teh site site where I found them http://www.gsahv.pp.fi/#XX5

these small boats are good for gaining experience with but once you build one you'll soon discover that there's not much practical use for any of them.
Once you move up to the 12-14 footers then you'll see some utility in them.

These plywood boats are excellent if you use the correct plywood, and epoxy / fiberglass to protect the wood. I have built three ( stitch and glue ). I agree about the size. My 11 foot boat can carry three, you can fish with two people, but I like it best fishing by myself so I can stand to fish.
My 14 footer is my favorite now, very stable, pleanty of room.

I built an "Elegant Punt" from plans purchased on Payson's site. I was very pleased with the results, and fished from it several times. It is intended as a yacht tender. But makes a great a one-fisherman boat, with a capacity of about 600 pounds. That's not an exageration. I stuffed my son and wife and I all in it, (over 550 combined) and it still had freeboard to go.
It is a great first build boat. I sold mine (at a profit) and have regretted that several times. I'm thinking of another. One of the best features of that boat was that I could carry it alone, and it was stable enough to stand in. And with me alone, it had about 2" draught.

i just finished my one sheet canoe. the OP is right, this was a ton of fun to build. this one is based off of the "dug" plans from http://koti.kapsi.fi/hvartial/index.htm
Mine ended up being 18 feet long. havent gotten her in the water yet but hopefully sometime this week i will take her out and make sure she floats!
I am very happy with the results being the first boat i've ever built. next im going to try out a strip built kayak.

Never built a 1 sheet boat but I did build a 19' Bruce Roberts sloop out of Bruynzeel plywood. I built it in a 1 car garage that was 19'6" and the boat was 19' 3". It was built upside down and had to be removed from the garage and turned over to complete the topside. So I had a turning over party and invited all my neighbors. It took me 2 1/2 years to build. I enjoyed sailing it on the Chesapeake Bay for several years.

Let me see...If you build a gimmick one sheet boat then you will have a gimmick boat. And you may have it for a long time. Spend some serious time researching exactly what type and size of boat will best fit your needs now and in the future. An 8 ft. boat is kind of small for even one adult let alone two.
