    Shellac before spraying toner?

    Greetings all,

I have ordered some Target Coatings USL water based lacquer and I absolutely love the product. I am not equipped to spray any type of solvent based lacquer due to the solvents in it, so I decided to try out the water based coatings and I am glad I did.

I plan on using the water based lacquer as a toner, and I would like to know if I should apply a washcoat of shellac before spraying the toner to avoid any possible issues with grain raising?

The woods I will be spraying are cherry and birch.

    Thanks!

Vito, you can use de-waxed shellac as a sealer (but it will also add color) or just spray a couple coats of un-dyed USL, knock off any "fuzzies" and then start with your toner coats using the dyed USL.
