    Ok finish for African Mahogany?

I'm just finising up a set of nesting tables made out of african mahogany. I'm very limited in my available finishing supplies. ''borgs and ace hardware'' I was thinking of useing a red mahogany stain followed by clear or amber shellac? I tried a sample with BLO and I want more of a darker tone or depth. any sugestions? I started a thread about two weeks ago with a pic of the small nesting table.

    Brett,

I just completed a set of exterior doors and used polymorized tung oil. Two coats of sealer and 4 coats of tung oil. The doors came out a dark orange. I you are interested in this product, PM me & I will dig up the source.

You've also got a Sherwin Williams store in Grand Junction.

No, not just paint, Sherwin Williams makes a pretty decent alkyd varnish, sells several lines of stains (though that includes Minwax--which is a Sherwin Williams brand) and other basic finishing materials. It does depend a bit on what the particular retail store carries, but they are company owned stores, not franchises.

    How about the internet

You should be able to order your finish supplies from the internet. Try www.woodcraft.com or www.rockler.com . I finished an African Mahogany bookcase using general finishes seal-a-cell and Arm-r-seal. It turned out pretty dark but the initial starting color of mahogany is very tree dependent. If you want it darker, I would play around with some dyes like transtint. That way it won't obscure any figure in the wood. But Watco with some shellac would also turn out great. If you buy shellac in a can, watch the date.

    Boiled Linseed Oil

A semi-drying oil used to enhance the grain of many types of wood. Flood it on let it set for 30 minutes or so then wipe it dry, leave it 24 hours before you top coat it.

    Lacquer over BLO?

Can you spray lacquer over BLO?
Was wondering if the oil would tend to make the lacquer fisheye.
