I find the bookmarks feature in Firefox to be quite an annoyance because no matter what I try I cannot make them sort alphabetically. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this problem?

Its just you;-)
I just click on the pulldown: Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks, right click in the list window and select Sort By Name.

Me too. Plus the new software has lost all my "notes" for each bookmark that I recorded with them.
I have to re-set the view order every single time I open book marks or even when switching to another folder.
