Spraying Lacquer over Danish oil finish

I applied a Danish Oil finish over a project. I decided that for the uses this table will face I need a more water resistant table. Can I spray lacquer over that finish without having to strip or sand down to bare wood?

    My instincts say "No"

Only one way to find out for sure. Apply some danish oil on some scrap plywood (cabinet grade) same as you applied on your table. Wait a few days to na week and spray lacquer over it. My guess is it will fish-eye on you. Try this first, then you will know for sure.

The solvents in lacquer can easily damage other finishes including oil based finishes. In this case, I'd suggest you stick with an oil based product if you feel the need to top coat with a film finish or put on a coat of de-waxed shellac as a barrier and spray on a water borne finish.

    Spraying lacquer

    Hi Chuck,

I spray lacquer over Watco oil with excellent results. You just have to make sure the Watco is good and dry.

I'm with Jim. When in doubt, use a shellac barrier coat.

Let it dry well, though, or it can blister under modest heat.

Modest heat? Is that heat that doesn't show very much skin?

This could not be more true. IF the oil is the slightest bit "un-dry" you'll get diasterous results. FISHEYES!!! But as long as it's dry you should have no problem. If you're really scared seal it with vinyl sealer first, but it still needs to be dry.
