cutting board question

am trying to make a cutting board that looks like it us woven. from the wAY I SEE IT I WOULD Be GLUING UP END GRAIN TO FASTEN ROWS TOGETHER. was thinking of doweling the pieces together. any ideas???saw the board on the baltimore cutting board site. thanks!!!

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you are trying to do. I googled "baltimore cutting board" and find only glass cutting boards with Baltimore Raven logos.

Can you be more specific about the web site and item you are referring to?

If you are referring to construction on the boards cited by Doug, I see a big problem with cross grain joints. Whether you use just glue or some other mechanical fastener like dowels, cross grain joints will ultimately fail. It's an attractive design but I don't see any way it can be constructed.

While the genereal rule is to not glue end grain to end grain, I made some cutting boards last year which did just that. They were from the Incra project book.

Those cutting boards are still solid after a year of use. I recall a thread where someone actually tried to break them. He couldn't get the TBII glue joints to break, but the Gorilla Glue joints broke.

Today's wood glues are pretty amazing. I wouldn't trust an end grain to end grain glue joint for something critical. But for a cutting board? It should be fine.

So are you wanting to make end grain boards or long grain boards?

There is a big difference in how they would be made and a different glue up for each kind.

Here are some of my end grain cutting boards and cheese boards from last Christmas, they are all end grain, not long grain.
