Work in Progress - Large Curly Maple Sofa Table

No finish on the wood yet, but this one should have lots of color in the grain. The wood has reddish-pink, white, black etc. color variations, in addition to being curly and spalted.

John, your table looks great. That is what my wife has been asking me to build. Where did you get the top? How are you going to finish the top?

Looks outstanding, can't Wait to see it finished.

Sam

I got four large maple trees from a friends property near Bellingham, Washington and hired a logging truck to take them to a guy with a portable sawmill. His parents had about 15 acres logged and the company that did the work left some of the trees behind. One of which was 4 feet in diameter. The shame of thing was how many curly maple trees were on the property in large stands. Up here in the pacific northwest douglas fir and red alder can be found in large groups, but the maples tend to grow more sporadically. A few here, a few there. To find a large group of western maple that literally takes up acres isn't something I see very often.

For the finish I think I'll go with Sam Maloof oil/poly.

John, you were VERY fortunate to get hold of that maple! That is some beautiful stuff, and you are producing some very deserving pieces with it. That figure is really going to pop again on this one. Nice work!

So, are you keeping all these pieces?

I'm not keeping any of these recent tables. I made a large dining room table and a breakfast nook table for myself earlier this year.

The top is attached with figure eight fasteners. The curved stretcher is doweled into the legs.
