Concrete bowl lathe for sale - **You could own a one of a kind machine!**

It started out as a concept and I ran with it..

It has a two horse motor with infinite variable speed control and will turn a six foot bowl if yer nuttie enough to try It has a SN2 chuck on it.

As it sits now:

For a complete pictorial documentary of the building of this lathe please view my thread on the build here:

http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=106663

Please read the thread if yer interested at all.

It works great but life got in the way of my hobby. Illness in the family has strapped us financially and I would like to recover some of the $ I invested in this monster. I'll spare you the details.

If you have any questions after reading the thread above feel free to shoot me an e-mail at triangle5@sti.net I dont get on the board much with all that is going on in my life so e-mail is prefered.

I can put it on a pallet and put it on a truck for you. It weighs in at about 1000 pounds and I have about $1500 into it. I am in area code 95338/95340 in central valley of California.

Pick up is welcome and I could deliver it most anywhere in California as long as you have the means to pluck it from the bed of my pickup. A forklift or overhead crane/engine hoist would do the trick.

It will need a tailstock and the ways welded up to be able to turn spindles and could concievably turn a tree trunk two feet in diameter and just over four feet long.

I hate to do this but I am facing possibility of foreclosure and have no where to put it.

My loss is your gain. I thought I would offer it here first but if no one bites it may end up on Craigslist and/or E-bay.

I'm thinking $1250 plus shipping is a steal for such a one of a kind machine (plus shipping or gas for delivery)

You will not be disappointed!!

I want to add, thanks to all the creekers that went along for the ride and all the input you all had during the build. I contemplated building em for sale or even a kit form, if anyone wants info to be able to build one for yerself, buy it and I'll share with you all I learned along the way

Thanks for looking,
Mark

Mark, I hate to hear this, I know the work you put into it. I hope you get a good price from it. Better yet I hope your situation changes and you can keep it!!

Come on folks, this is an opportunity to own an outstanding and unique bowl lathe exactly as it is, for a fraction of the cost of a "store-bought" bowl lathe. This lathe is easily worth $2,500 IMHO. For ref., I do not know Mark, but have followed his lathe building thread with interest and wish him well in this time of need.

I agree. Mark has put engineering expertise into this build and the best of materials. In addition, he has also enjoyed tips and knowledge offered by many on the creek so its almost a group project. A rare chance to own such a feat.
Mark - may times improve quickly and painlessly!

Why don't we all contribute money to help him out. On the Practical Machinist's forum we had a flood victim who many of use helped out. I am willing. Is there a way to get this better into the notice of our members?

Mark,
Have you pitched the lathe to your local woodworker/turning club? A special lathe with that capacity may be of more benefit to a group of turners more than an individual. It would be a marvelous investment for a turning club!
Your local Rockler/Woodcraft may also be interested. They could charge for time on it.

Just some ideas in an effort to help... Prayers for you and your family!

Greg

i agree. we should either help him out, or help find a company who will help market this beast. use this as a prototype or something.
i cant beleive it is for sale. well, i hope you have the best of luck end up not having to sell the beast.

did you sell all your walnut burl?
if you didnt, offer it to a venear place. the walnut burl inlay for a mercedes is about $400-600. with the amount of burl you have you could make a killing selling it to a venear maker.

Maybe we could raise the money to buy the lathe and offer it as a raffle item, or maybe a Free Stuff Drawing for contributers?

i know. we could ship it around the counrty. it would stopp at different turners houses around the country. put the lathe on a trailer. then drive it to the closest turner near you. they pay say,,$20? to turn as much as they want on it, up to like a week or two. then that person drives it to the next nearest person. then there will be no shipping charge other than the trailer to start. since each person would transport the trailer every one would pay for their own gas.
the money would go to Mark to pay for the lathe, and it could be payed ahead of time so that he would have to money now instead of spread out.

then after it has made its trip around the country, and been signed by all the SMC turners that want to, it would be returned to its home in "Gods country: Mariposa CA" for mark to use. then he will get the money he needs and wont have to truely part with his beast.

We need a moderator to get control of this mutual help and sort of coordinate things. I have contacted Keith Outten. I'm waiting to see how he handles this.

I'm in. Mark is obviously a man about his business and somehow he should be helped and somehow this amazing machine needs to get to someplace where it will be used. This is a "legacy" machine.

Thank you all,

I like the way you think Mr. Dooling I would love to see it being used by a group of some sort that would make the best use of it.

Leigh, Another great idea, I would love to see any proceeds go to the FPP project.

And George, thanks for bringing this to Keiths attention. I am open to an auction or something. I could finish it up by way of welding up the ways but I would need a tailstock in hand to do so properly.

Curtis, I do appreciate the sentiments but I am afraid I won't have room for it and want it to have a home where it will be put to work as it should. I dont want to stick it in storage and collect dust, it was built to turn and I would love to see it do so in the hands of experienced turners.

It (yes I will admit) is a machine beyond my abilities. I should have just bought a Jet 1442 or something from the git go....But it was fun building the 'BEAST'. I might consider trading for something smaller, the big issue at hand is I am having to down-size in a few months and won't have the room for it.

I still have some of the Claro left but it is not a part of this equasion.

Thanks again folks, some great people on this site!!

I don't think an auction would do well. This is a very heavy lathe to ship, and might be too large for many workshops. You might lose money on it. Too chancy. I haven't heard from Keith yet, Hopefully he won't be long in answering.
