Another slick item from LV update
Update on the LV scraper plane insert. I mounted it in a Craftsman No. 5 plane from the swap meet.
Well I can say that I wish I had read the prior reviews. I am a little disappointed with scraper insert. HOWEVER, it does do what I personally got it for. I got it to level off inlays that I make of different woods. They all are not the same height, and a regular plane does not work well to level them off. So this scraper insert, actually works very well for leveling off inlays. What did disappoint me was exactly what the prior posts complained about. It does chatter, but you can adjust that out. If it chattered on your flamed maple desk top, you may be upset. But I did manage to stop it from chattering. You can see on the insert pic that it does not do well cross grain. But the board is sitka spruce, very soft so that is expected. The insert is made of spalted maple and milo, a Hawaiian exotic wood. Not hard wood. Bottom line, I'm glad I got it, it was cheap, and it does what I personally got it for. It may not be for everyone, but it is a 45 buck scraper plane. (10 bucks shipping) Can't beat that. I only played with it for about an hour, set up and planing, er, scraping my insert down. I'm far from a plane expert, so that may be a lot of the problem. I'll continue to use it to scrape glue joints etc. Those do my sanding drum belts some damage. I'll attempt to scrape down some nice hardwoods too. whale 001.jpg whale 002.jpg whale 005.jpg |

Kyle,
Thanks for the report. Hopefully, you can get some use out of it, and make it a worthwhile purchase.

Oh, I'm happy with it, since it did do a good job leveling that inlay..... I was just saying that the earlier thread really wasn't kind to that insert, and I'd agree. That thread mentioned that it chattered. And it does, but it can be adjusted out. I'll do more testing later on some regular wood, just with or against the grain.
Makes some pretty nice shavings in that pic huh? The challenge when leveling the inlays, is the grain goes in many directions, it usually is figured wood too. A regular plane, no matter how shallow I set it, always gouged and cracked the inlay. Some parts you're with the grain and suddenly you're cross grain, or against the grain. Tough to do. Works for me, I'm happy. |
