Figured Maple Bowl.

Another weekend of turning classes.
Learned lots and realized this is only the tip of the iceberg for learning the spinny world...

I did come away with a few bowls.
Only two came home as I left one behind at my brothers house.
Small price to pay for room and board for a night.

This first bowl is figured maple. 9"x 4".
Big hunk of wood to start with for me.
I wanted to try something with straight lines. ( hard to give up that flat world completely)
Making the transition on the inside side to the bottom took me a while to get just so without any curve.
Salad bowl for two.

The second is a small maple bowl.
Nothing special.
But If I keep on like this my wife will have a ton of candy bowls..

Thanks for taking a look.
And sorry about the pics.
Thats another thing one will have to learn.

As a side note.
They should not hold these classes in a store.
Break time is very hard on ones wallet.
After two weekends I may have to get an extra job...

Sounds like and looks like the class was a success! Good job on the bowls, Gary. I like the second one better - nice shape, and the color is very warm.

Looks like you got a chance to use some of that "gold infused" hardwood they sell up there in conifer land! How much does a hardwood blank set you back up there? After hearing from you the price of 4/4 stock of cherry and walnut, I am afraid to think about bowl blanks!

That second job thing may have some merit!

Good looking bowls Gary, I like the second one better though. Looks to me like you'll be leaving the flat world behind soon enough. Have you tried any green wood yet? If not PM me, I may have something for you.

Thanks for all the comments.

John the chunck of figured maple was a bit over 2 board feet.
They graded it AA.
Cost was about 30.00 bucks
I brought home a few of AAA blanks, (for when I can do this properly)
Cost for a 9"x 4" was in the 50.00 range.

Mike thanks for the offer on the green wood.
I will shoot you a pm.

Gary - real nice work on the bowls! Curves/form is something you will always play with - but getting a class on the basics of bowl turning is something you can seriously build on! Nice work! Looking forward to seeing what you turn next!

Nice work on the bowls... Like the others, I prefer the second bowl. Get some green wood quickly so that you can spend that money elsewhere. At fifty bucks a bowl, the vortex will be pretty expensive. It's bad enough without dropping that kind of cash on blanks. Lookng forward to seeing what you turn next

From the looks of the bowls it looks like the class went well. Nice bowls.
