Finishing reference book or website?

As I continue to learn more about finishing I am challenged by the many complexities of finishes and which ones can be safely combined to yield the desired results. Dewaxed shellac, BLO, polyurethane, polyacrilic, danish oil, etc, etc. And of course there is no shortage of differing opinions and I accept that but I am wondering if there is a good reference book or web site that can help me decide on a finishing regimen and build my knowledge base.
Thanks
joe

+1 for bob Flexner's book. Also Jeff Jewitt at Homestead finishing has two books out that deal with hand applied finishing as opposed to spray. Bob's book covers both as well as excellent explanations of the different finishes.
I'd get all three.

Haven't read Flexner book.

Like this on by Jeff Jewitt: Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing

+1 for Bob Flexner's book... aka the finishers bible. Also, Jeff Jewitt at Homestead finishing books are good.

Finishing is an 'Art & a Science'. Actually, it is a process. You must understand the properties and tendencies of the finish you are using. You must know the proper steps and techniques, then you must execute them properly.

First, let me say that I have both of these books on the table next to me right now. I refer to them very regularly. If I had to choose one, I would choose the Flexner, but both have their strengths.

Just so you're aware, Bob Flexner's book has at least two editions. The latest is from 2005. The earlier one (which I also owned) is from the 1990's. The newer one contains a great many updates that are worth having. Don't try to save a few bucks by buying the old version.

The two best are Flexner's Understanding Wood Finishing and Jewitt's Taunton New Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing. Both are excellent and not totally redundant. Jewitt's is slight better in the "how to" department but Flexner is very good in that area too.

Bah!

I just bought what appears to be the 1993 version from Peachtree in their closeout section. I'm not sure why they would have the 1993 version in stock even as a closeout, but it sure doesn't say anything about a 2005 version in their description. Such is life.
