Anyone have these Woodcraft chisels?

Thinking of getting these chisels, regularly 8 for $85, on sale for $49.99, plus I have a $10 discount card, making it $39.99. Well, that and a 55 mile drive. A good deal, unless they're complete junk. Anyone have them?

I bought a set of them for Christmas last year upon the recommendation of one of the professional woodworkers on this site (and his own.) They sharpened very well and have held up well with moderate use. IMHO, they are a great buy at $39.99.

I have those, too. Good quality bench chisels - a very good deal at that sale price.

I have them and like them for the price. They definitely are better than the BORG ones I puchased before becoming serious.

Cheap is cheap. Check out the very reasonably priced Lee Valley bevel edge chisel set; got great reviews in the last chisel test by FWW. Plastic handles, but don't let that bother you; made in Japan, not China.

Maybe a foolish question

Several times I have seen the term BORG used in the forums? Can someone please explain what it means?

Many thanks,

(Full disclosure statement: I am a Woodcraft employee.)

Don't own them, but sell them and have used/sharpened them. Decent low-end chisels; have noticed no significant problems holding an edge. They will need a fair amount of tune-up to extract best performance. Much better than the BORG/HF junk, but most certainly not in the Sorby, Ashley Iles, Pfeil, LN, Japanese chisel quality realm. IMO, decent quality for the money.

Not necessarily.... Sorby has had some heat treatment quality control problems with their bench chisels in the past few years; some of them are even softer than the (Sheffield) Crowns.....
