This was a a machine shop but these guys are not what I'd call machinists
Which sort of explains why they chose to make a one pass cutter for the whole diameter. That was an awful lot of surface area for one cutter to handle. The chatter must have been humongous.
I'd have made a ball turning head and used conventional cutters for the geometry single pointing the whole thing.
