Hi, Im Fred Skelly. Saw your post on which plane to buy. Im a long time power tool guy but only about 18 mos into planes. So my perspective is closer to where you probably are. Heres my thoughts.

    1) Yes, you CAN start with a used plane. I agree - get a #5. Yes, you WILL notice a diff between an old plane & a modern one. I now buy only new ones, but thats nuts if you dont even know you like the hobby. Buy new for your 2nd plane, as you said.

    2) THE most crucial thing in deciding whether to continue with planes is learning to sharpen WELL. If the tool isnt VERY sharp, every time you pick it up will be discouraging. Start with the "scary sharp" method (sandpaper of different grits) & upgrade later. Search the archives for sharpening threads for details.

    3) Get a copy of Garrett Hacks book on using hand planes. Its less than $30 & is a good overview. Its very helpful.

I hope this helps. Happy Holidays!
    Fred
