My favorite is the set I bought :)
I have an aluminium Swanson Speed Square. Seems like I've had it forever. It's perfectly square despite being tossed around for 20+ years. Great carpentry tool. In the shop I occasionally use it for...
This is not unique to engineers. Software Development is filled with just such people. Brilliant, but sometimes lacking in practical knowledge.
I make lots of mistakes; more than most. I don't get things perfect. My time for woodworking is limited and my goal is to create something. I have no goal to become a hand tool woodworker. It's a...
Pete,
Since you are close by, if I need a laser transit, I know who to call :)
Early on, I would practice but once I got the hang of it, I stopped practicing and focused on getting stuff done. I sold my power jointer a while back, so every edge is hand jointed and every board...
I don't often borrow or loan tools. If I borrow a tool I return it in at least the same condition; better if possible. That means I will return it clean, sharp, lubricated, etc. If it breaks, I will...
Terrific work everyone! I'm always in awe at the talent here in our little forum. It's truly inspiring even though I feel like the least able guy in the room.
I'm working on a frame and panel...
+1
I've never used more than a spritz from a spray bottle I keep a my sharpening bench. No need to soak shaptons.
I flatten my with a coarse diamond stone as needed. Maybe every few...
I was at the Boston Public Market last weekend and saw a woman with a jig fastened to a small steel cart sharpening knives. Didn't even have a stall just that tiny push cart. It was a simple...
What I have works well and the money is spent (down the porcelain oasis) :) I use a combination diamond stones and a Shapton to finish. I wanted minimum maintenance and as few parts as possible....
I added leather to the movable jaw of my vices a couple of years ago. I chose leather about 3/16" thick and put the smooth side out. I mounted it with plain yellow glue and it's never come loose....
Even though I only have one smoother, I'd like another. Mostly I'd like a lighter vintage smoother because... it's lighter. It's important in the sense that it's the tool I use for fine tuning. For...
I'm sure I've broken some rules :)
I have a #7 that's my "real" jointer.
My #6 get used as both a heavy jack and a small jointer.
I have a #5 setup as a scrub plane
I have another #5 setup as...
I don't own and PEC squares yet but I did get a couple of their steel rules. Based on that, I want to pick up one of the PEC 6" combos. I suspect I'll like it as much as my Starretts. They are not...
I have a Starrett 12" combo square. It may be the most used tool I own. I also have a 4" Double square that gets lots of use and a set of Groz machinists squares. I've had a couple of inexpensive 6"...
I bought about 200 BF Walnut that had air dried in a barn for 20+ years. It was mostly left overs. About 1/2 was under 5" wide, much of it with major twists and bows, plenty of knots. On the plus...
I prefer 12' or 14' tapes for the shop. I'll use most any if it's accurate. However when accuracy really matters, I reach for a steel rule. I have 6", 12" and 36" that I trust.
I have plenty but top of my list today is the woodcraft slow-speed wet grinder. The 1000 grit stone is horizontal and spins slowly (like a vinyl album). I don't know what to do with it. I don't want...
If you want to restore it back to a single bevel, I would grind the edge back flat until I erased the bevel on the back. Then I'd grind and then hone the edge until it was sharp.
My opinion is that the #4 V3, which is the only one I have used, is very well made in every aspect. I think it is an absolute bargain and works perfectly. Smooth, predictable operation, nicely...
I tried to stay out of the conversation. This really is pointless but here's my $0.02 anyway:
The purpose behind patent law is to encourage development of new products by providing a limited...

I agree completely :)
While I have some strong opinions on corporations, patent law and such, I've mostly stayed out of the fray. This thread seems too much like a religious debate for my taste. It's a battle of the Good...
I can't help but to chuckle. Knowing this is woodworker porn does not diminish my enjoyment looking at it. That barely curling shaving is seductive :)
Very nice!
