Four years ago I bought a Gast pump off of ebay. It runs on 110 and I payed
$65 for it. Runs great, hold 22 inches of vacuum which is way more then
enough unless you're turning bowling balls and...
Thanks guys. The platter is turned from maple, the red line is in a grove and was done
with a "Prismacolor" pencil. There are three layers of milk paint, two of a light color and one of black...
I haven't been here in a while but I've been out in the shop working. The is
one pot in a series of decorated platters. It's about 16 inches in dia. and decorated with milk paint.
I started turning and sharpening with the Wolverine dressing gear. Two
years ago I bought the Geiger Wheel Dresser. Long story short I put the
One Way dresser in our clubs annual fund raising...
I have a Robust lathe and I'm pretty sure it's one of the best investments
I've made. The lathe is big and solid, quiet, powerful and the tilt away
tail stock is worth everything I payed it. On...
Thanks guys. You're right it does look like an oriental piece. I'm a
potter and it seems most potters are influenced by asian pot forms.
Guess I keep making these as more burl comes along.
This is a who knows what burl pot with a walnut rim. I keep doing these
jars....I must like the assembly part. The jar finished at around 8 inches
high and 6 inches in dia. It's finished with...
I use mostly Cherry and White Ash. Then there are always a few odd ones.
Like Plum, Walnut and Pear. The finishes I use most often are Walnut oil or
mineral oil. They're easy to apply and food safe.
Like Curt, I turn the handle, thin the blade with the band saw and finish
the shape with my belt sander. I've made lots of these and they sell well.
Rich,
I hollow the body down to where I think the bottom should be after
removing the tenon. I use a OneWay Termite tool to do most of the
wood removal. Then I use a small round nosed scraper to...
Thanks Guys,
I'm glad the jar went over well. The jar is around ten inches tall
and 3.5 inches wide. It's finished with shellac and Renaissance
wax then hand buffed during the Packers game. ...
I've been turning burl covered jars every time I get the chance.
This one has a burl body and a clear maple rim and lid. Every
burl is a new experience I never know what colors will pop when
I get...
Matt,
I've been turning on my Robust 25 for more then two years. I've never
regretted the purchase of my lathe. I mostly turn bowls in the 12 to 20
inch range and for that this lathe is a work...
Thanks guys. Ya gotta love that wood. You take a chunk of the stuff, spin
it at a hundred miles an hour, shovel a sharp knife into it and when comes
to a stop it's christmas! Great grain and...
I was lucky enough to score the trunk of a large walnut tree last year.
I roughed maybe twenty large bowls from the wood and now I'm starting
to finish them. This one is about 13 inches across. The...
When did you join SMC?
Maybe two years ago
How did you find out about this site?
Surfing for woodturning places
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
I'm mostly a lurker so reading...
Take a 0000 steel wool pad and shred it into a plastic peanut butter
jar containing white vinegar. Let the solution set for a few days and
use it to darken your turnings. Dark wood goes black!
Chris,
Looks like it's going to happen! Brent maybe slow, but well worth the wait.
Welcome to a small club (Robust owners). I think you appreciate your new
lathe as much as I do mine.
Chris,
You may want to contact Brent. At one time he was about to market
an attacment to your lathe named"Sky Hook". It is a hoist that works
like a tailstock. Maybe he could include one with your...
Chis,
I have a 1 ton engine hoist that I bought from Harbour Freight. It's on
wheels and folds up to a package about a foot thick. As I recall it was
on sale and cost me something like $129.00....
Curt,
I used a palm V gouge and a lot of pushing. If I do it again I'm
going to put some power to the gouge.
Again thanks for the good replies. I really enjoy making these things
and seeing the support has got me going to the studio much more often.
Everyone turn pots!
Thanks Creekers, I appreciate your kind comments. Chris, I didn't use
the index. I put the tool rest level with the middle of the bowl and used
a pencil on the rest to mark guide lines on the rim...
George, Here's the two photos that were missing.
