I wouldn't expect it to be 75 degrees OR sunny in San Francisco in July, more likely 60 degrees and foggy. And, the interior valley can easily be 100 - 110 degrees.
I wouldn't worry about catching the cats, they learn fast. I caught 2 of my cats last summer, just one time each. I also caught four racoons and two possums, all on the back patio.

Bill, I like the form just fine. I agree the collar could be a little smaller but all in all, a very nice piece. I can't wait to try a hollow form and I'd be thrilled to turn that piece.
