That's hilarious! Do I really want to be that guy?
Hi, Terry.
Actually, there is a Record iron in it. Nice and thick - its cuts better than any of the old Stanleys I've used so far. I'm very happy with the whole setup.
That is really funny, Bill. I had an incident with the stairs not too long ago. My first glue-up since the cold set in was my bench top - 6' x 2' x 3.5". It would have made it down the stairs if...
So, it gets cold in Michigan.
Because of this, I moved all my glues, batteries, etc. into the house for the winter, but am still working on projects out in the unheated garage. But last week, I...
Thanks for your tips, Chris. I couldn’t wait to get home and make my first cuts.
Peter - Thank you for pointing me in a great direction. I have checked out the Bad Axe saws, and I hope to be...
Well, it was only a matter of time. I decided that I'm not afraid of the slippery slope of saws, so I got started. I picked up the Veritas 14 ppi carcass saw so I can get started joining my bench...
Maybe this is a dumb idea, but if wind is the factor here, maybe a return to the original function of the "threshold" is in order. They were first used when commoners had dirt floors, and used straw...
My favorite:
I make a cut...
Am very impressed with my cut...
Am so impressed that I check with digital calipers to see how awesome I really am...
And it is exactly, to the thousandth of an inch,...
+1 on single glue-ups. Like Sean said, Titebond only requires 30 minutes of clamping but no stress for 24 hours, so multiple glue-ups in one day are no problem. Also, having perfect edge joints...
I guess that depends on the store. I was reprimanded at a baby merchandise store for taking photos of a rocking chair!
What type of vise are you thinking of for edge jointing, Jim? A leg vise? That is what I've decided on, but if you've come up with an even better idea, I would love to hear about it!
Great bench, and nice job documenting everything with photos. I enjoyed seeing your progress.
Thanks for the responses and ideas all.
I think another thing to consider is the option of working from my knees when my back begins to tire. I think that Landis mentions in his Workbench book that...
I'm building my bench top right now, and I think I've made all of my major design decisions, save the height.
Now, "The Schwarz" says that the ideal height would be where your primary knuckles of...
I'm using off cuts to make a new set of winding sticks, and I have some small chunks of walnut that I'm thinking of using for a matching set of squares, marking gauges, dovetail marking guides, etc.
Truly, truly beautiful. I'm relatively new to the finer aspects of craftsmanship, and I find myself drawn towards work like yours. Thank you for posting. Work like this serves as a compass for...
Friday Night:
Went to Good Friday Service.
Spent some time with wife, daughter, new baby boy.
Studied for exams.
Relaxed a bit.
Saturday:
Went to shop, completed finish rub on kitchen bench...
Priceless!!!!
I have a large set of assorted Sharpies!
I confess that on a big "oops", I used a couple markers to freehand the grain after everything else failed. :-)
If you know of a local metal fabrication shop, you should just waltz in there to "get a price" on what you are looking for. If it is a part that's made of relatively cheap stock, and it is something...
My wife and I will pray for you and your family, Mac. May you be blessed with strength and comfort.
Yes, there is steel reinforcement. Normally I use a combination of 3/8" rebar, wire mesh and fiber mesh.
That is a beautiful piece. I'd love to learn how to do these types of projects.
So, we were pretty slow at work, and I had to come up with some money for tuition (tools), so I put an ad on CL for concrete countertop work. I landed a kitchen countertop job, and when they saw...
